Ford Motor Company based in America is the third largest automaker company in the world after Toyota and General Motors. Henry Ford in a converted factory with just $28,000 in cash founded this multinational corporation with headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan in June 16, 1903. There were twelve investors who helped Henry Ford to build this company. Amongst them John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge were the most notable one who later found their own company, Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company.

Like many other great enterprises, Ford Motor Company's beginnings were modest. Henry Ford's dream was to make affordable cars for a mass market. Initially, the Ford Motor Company started the production work with some very few employees who used to work day and night on each car from components made to order by other companies.

The company began to name their new cars using the first 19 letters of the alphabet. In 1908, the first brand 'Model T' was born that was produced for almost 19 years with 15 million units sold. In 1925, Ford Motor Company acquired the Lincoln Motor Company, thus moving towards luxury cars, and in the 1930's, the company started focusing on mid-priced cars. It is one of the few companies in America that survived the Great Depression and the largest family-controlled company till date.

The company celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 16, 2003. Today very few companies are there that can be closely identified with the history and development of industry and society for many decades as Ford Motor Company. Its global automotive brands include Mercury and Lincoln of the US, Jaguar, Volvo of Sweden, Land Rover and Jaguar of UK. Ford also shares one-third controlling power in Mazda. The other brands include Aston Martin and Ford.

The Ford Motor Company has major manufacturing operations in different countries of the world like Canada, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, the People's Republic of China, South Africa, Russia and India. Ford Motor Company in 1999 was ranked as one of the world's most profitable corporations, and the second largest automaker in the world. Since 2000, there was some loss in the market share in the US, but now it is back to its profitable status. In the 2007 Fortune 500 list that is calculated on the base of global revenues, Ford was placed on the seventh position. It also had more quality awards from J.D Power than any other automobile company.

Still today some important concepts of Henry Ford is taken into consideration by people who want to do well in business like highly efficient factories, highly paid workers and low prices. His philosophies are popularly known as Fordism. Today after a century of hard work and labor, the company has began its second century journey of existence.
